“Ilona Royce Smithkin: The Sixties, New York City and
Provincetown” came about while sitting in Ilona’s apartment in
Provincetown where she spends her summers. For several years
I’ve gone up there to sip coffee/vodka (me/her) and talk about
art. Her studio overlooks Cape Cod Bay, and one entire wall is
used as storage for paintings. Jammed like books on a shelf, they
gave little clue as to what was on them. All I could see was years
of dust and aged canvas wrapped around the edge of a stretcher
bar.
